Mr. John E. von Schlegell, Portland, was appointed to the Oregon State Board of Higher Education in January 2004.
Mr. von Schlegell is managing principal and co-founder of Endeavour Capital, which invests in privately held businesses based in the Northwest. He believes that "higher education in Oregon--and education in general--is the key to our future, both economically and socially" and has shown long term interest in education through his service on other boards.
Prior to founding Endeavour Capital in 1991, Mr. von Schlegell served as general partner at GTCR in Chicago, one of the country's oldest and largest private equity firms. Previously, he worked in the public sector as Assistant Secretary for Human Services for the State of Massachusetts, and also in manufacturing at Caterpillar Tractor. He has served the boards of Providence/St. Vincent Hospital, Northwest Academy, Oregon Trout, Oregon Episcopal School, the Oregon Symphony Board, and Metropolitan Family Services.
He earned his BA in English from Stanford University, and an MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business.
